THE CONTINENTAL MARK II STORY The Continental Mark II was the elite automobile of the 1950s' rich and famous: Elvis Presley Frank Sinatra Louie Prima Dwight Eisenhower Barry Goldwater Spike Jones Nelson Rockefeller Henry J. Kaiser Howard Johnson the Shah of Iran and many other celebrities owned them. The Mark II wasn't made by Lincoln but by the short-lived Continental Division of the Ford Motor Company. Its general manager was William Clay 'Bill' Ford son of Edsel Ford and grandson of Henry Ford. The Mark II's sticker price was $10400 twice the price of the 1956 Lincoln. Much of the car was assembled by hand and Ford claimed it lost $1000 on each Mark II it sold. The unprofitable Mark II and the Continental Division were discontinued after Ford went public in 1956. 2550 Mark IIs were built during the 1956 model year and 446 (including 2 convertibles) during the 1957 model year for a total of 2996 Mark IIs. About 1500 Mark IIs are still in existence. (About half are roadworthy) THIS CAR Reported to have been originally owned by the Kingsford family (of charcoal fame) this car has been frame-off restored at a cost nearing $200000. The reason for the high cost is simply because most of the replacement parts for these cars are not made therefore parts have to be re-conditioned or fabricated during the restoration. Chassis No. 1E15220 265bhp 4235cc double overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine four-speed manual gearbox independent front suspension with double wishbones torsion bars and anti-roll bar independent rear suspension with lower wishbones trailing lower radius arms coil springs anti-roll bar and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes Wheelbase: 96'' Jaguar unveiled the brilliant E-Type at the Geneva Auto Salon in 1961 and in so doing stunned the motoring community. With its monocoque passenger compartment/tail section tube-framed engine bay and tilting bonnet it was clearly descended from the legendary D-Type but its well-appointed interior civilized 3.8-liter XK engine and compliant suspension made it an ideal two-seat touring car and successor for the XK 140 and 150. The E-Type was immediately successful and its timeless design remains one of the most attractive sports cars ever built. While Sir William Lyons was personally involved in the design of all Jaguar's cars he enlis ted the formally trained mathematician and aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer to execute the E-Type's design. Beyond its fully independent suspension and advanced four-wheel disc brakes the E-Type was also downright fast with a reported top speed approaching 150 mph. In fact its high performance levels and superb driving dynamics placed it solidly within range for Ferrari's GT cars but at a fraction of the price. In keeping with Jaguar tradition the E-Type was continuously improved and for 1965 the proven 3.8-liter engine was enlarged to 4.2 liters of displacement. Its rated horsepower remained unchanged but a meaningful increase in torque provided greater drivability which was enhanced by the arrival of a long-awaited fully synchronized gearbox. This particular E-Type's engine was rebuilt in the 1980s and the car was treated to a complete nut-and-bolt restoration in 1990. In 2004 the car was freshened with work that included the brakes and calipers tuning of the wire wheels new black canvas top carpets hoses belts chrome and recalibration of the speedometer and odometer. As presented it is finished in stunning red with a black interior and such features as a rear luggage rack correct redline tires on chrome wire wheels and a Kenlowe electric fan for improved drivability. The car has always been extremely well cared for. It is well sorted and needs nothing to be driven and enjoyed. The Series I E-Type is considered the most desirable of the range due to its purity of line and featuring the classic covered headlamps.
